Conclusion:

Nearly 5,000 years after bestowing the superpowers of the Egyptian gods and imprisoning him at the same speed - Black Adam has been freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice in the modern world.

Everyone knows The Rock, but suppose someone doesn't. If that person went to Black Adam and, upon coming off the stage, was told that Dwayne Johnson was once the hottest man in sports-entertainment and one of the sexiest humans on the planet, they'd assume you were crazy. But that's how it feels when watching Dwayne Johnson in Black Adam, portraying popular DC Comics hero Adam Teth, trying to subdue that natural magic and deliver a quieter, more exciting performance.

The movie isn't quiet, full of constant action and mostly gruesome special effects despite often feeling like a graphic novel to come to life (a crowded, charming onslaught of color and imagery work under the always-better situation). It's a cacophony of destruction that rarely allows characters to breathe and interact normally or do anything beyond smashing each other to shreds (the number of blasts here will wonder how there would be a city with citizens left to liberation and freedom) and a faucet show on the indomitable magical crowns.

However, when there's a little break in that mess, Adam usually makes a flimsy confrontational joke that will, once again, make people wonder how this massive and glowing behemoth was partly responsible for carrying WWE into the mainstream. None of this is helped by needle drops on the nose during these chaotic combos, introducing superhero powers with a sequential set on Rolling Stones' Paint it Black (it's noisy over the TV spot, too, but straight-up cringe in the final version) . At worst, Dwayne Johnson looks completely lost.

The same can also be said of director Jaume Collet-Serra (working from a script by Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines, and Sohrab Noshirvani based on characters created by Otto Binder and C. Something coherent with sentimental stakes. It works fairly well in the third act But no service is rendered by such an overcrowded cast of characters.

Not only does Black Adam introduce Adam Teth and explore his unique moral code, he also chooses to integrate the Justice Society, which consists of Doctor Destiny by Pierce Brosnan (a wizard who is able to see the future), Hockman from Aldis Hodge (a winged warrior), and Noah Centineo Atom Smasher (able to Adjusting its height to sheer size, it appears as Ben Ant-Man's deal), and Quintessa Swindell's Cyclone (her powers are somewhat self-explanatory). I also can't tell you a single thing about the identity of these characters beyond their abilities and fighting styles because they only exist as obstacles for Adam on a crash course to understand what it means to be a hero while still retaining his favorite violent brand of justice.

When the script sometimes tends to find humor in there, like an amusing moment where you see Adam learn proper questioning and sarcasm tactics, the movie finds a quick pulse for a while. The majority of Black Adam is an endless series of fights in which, while they're okay to brag about looking at the genre, constantly eliminating opportunities to explore this character and the fictional city of Kahndaq, he was once a slave before fighting against a tyrannical king. They ended up buried for thousands of years. Admittedly, some of that show comes back into play during the final extension and is moderately involved, but by that point Black Adam had brushed off anything potentially interesting about himself to bombard with an extended CGI action that had no meaning or consequences.

The urgency supposedly comes from Adam, who is tasked with rescuing Amon (Budi Sabungwe), the son of militant Adriana (Sarah Shahi), of organized crime syndicate Intergang, who just so happens to have taken control of the city and drained it of its magic. Resource - Ethereum crystals. Helped by friends and family (one is trying to provide comic relief), Ismail (Marwan Kanzari) secretly infiltrates their ranks to find the mystical crown mixed with Eternium that confers immunity. The implication of this is that Adam and the Justice Society put their differences aside for the greater good, although in the end, Amanda Waller wants Viola Davis what is essentially another custodian of Superman.

Black Adam's tortured past and anti-hero character offer the potential for something refreshing, but the movie is only concerned with the impulses of action. I also realize that this project took 15 years to make and personally for Dwayne Johnson, so it's not fun defining this, but I'm doing it too because I know there's a character worth exploring here. And I would say maybe there's a sequel that will get the job done, but it looks like DC has something else in store that will satisfy the fandom but might fail to expand into the game of heroes.
